Books by Sencha Skene

I practice something called “naturalistic Paganism,” which is a form of nature-centered spirituality that doesn’t necessarily believe in gods and goddesses as separate and discrete entities, but as archetypal forces of nature. I’ve been writing books on naturalistic Paganism and nature-centered forms of spirituality since around 2015. I’ve been a practicing Pagan since 1976, back when having such a practice in the Bible Belt where I was born could get you at least ostracized and at worst assaulted. I took a “Pagan” name many years ago, and still write books and music on nature-centered spirituality under that name.

“Sencha” means “chronicler, storyteller, or historian,” and “Skene” means “dagger.” My family is Scottish in heritage, and the Hall family was a sept of Clan Skene. The name “Skene” has Scottish origins and is derived from a Gaelic word that means “knife” or “sword” (the Gaelic word “sgian”).

Historically, the name is linked to a Scottish clan from the northeast of Scotland, specifically Aberdeenshire. Clan Skene’s origins are rooted in early medieval times, and the family name is believed to have come from a legendary ancestor who saved the King of Scots by using a small dagger (sgian) in battle. As a reward, the king granted him land and the family name Skene.

The area of Skene in Aberdeenshire still carries the name today, and the Skene family has a long history tied to the region. Over time, the name has spread, but it retains its associations with both the physical area in Scotland and the legacy of the clan’s warrior heritage. By taking the last name “Skene,” I am honoring my Scottish heritage.

If you have an interest in nature-centered spirituality or in naturalistic Paganism, you may enjoy my books on the subject.
